About

The Snowkite Therapy Sessions at the Sanitarium was started in 2004 as a way to showcase snowkiting and an opportunity for the snowkiting tribe to gather at a great location near the end of the season. Started by James Brown, the godfather of snowkiting, the event has grown to be a standard on the snowkite circuit. Located on the South end of Dillon Reservoir near the sanitation depot, the area quickly acquired the nickname of the Sanitarium and some of the snowkite tricks this location offers are insane! With steady, predictable winds and good conditions, the Sanitarium is a great place to kite and an excellent place to hold an event.

Located in world-renowned Summit County, the Sanitarium offers unparalleled exposure for the sport of snowkiting and the sponsors that make the Therapy Sessions happen. Highway 9 between the I-70 corridor and Breckenridge sees tens of thousands of vehicles a day heading to the mountain or home for skiing at one of the four area ski resorts. Most of these winter sports enthusiasts drive right past the Snowkite Therapy Sessions event site where many of them get their first introduction to snowkiting. The pull-offs and parking lot at the Sanitarium fill quickly and stay full as people are drawn to the colorful kites that fill the air above the event site.
